The End of a Movement

On September 27th, the man many credit as the frontrunner of the Sexual Revolution died. Hugh Hefner certainly left his mark in the world. America lead the charge as the world stepped into some of it’s darkest days. Women were profaned as they, in the eyes of many, became mere sexual objects, simply existing to fulfill the vile appetites of corrupt men.

Many Christian leaders have pointed to the prophetic symbolism of Hefner’s passing, saying that it marks the death of the sexual revolution. It’s time for America to turn around. Our generation needs a revolution in the realm of purity. While this time marks the end of one movement, where the stage in a sense has been cleared, it also leaves a vacancy. Who will set the new standard? Do we, the Church, stand back and watch as someone else with godless motives takes the stage and drags this generation into greater despair? Do we let the ears of our generation be filled with society’s standard of morality because we, the Church, are too afraid to talk about “sex”?

While we blush in our church pews, trembling and afraid to discuss the hard issues of sexuality with this generation, the world does not hesitate. Our absence is only making room for their atrocities to plague the hearts of this generation. Let me put it bluntly: There are 8 major tragedies that will only escalate if the Church doesn’t take the stage and address these things now…

  1. Women will be sexualized far beyond the atrocities we’ve already seen. (This includes the church girls you refuse to talk too about sexuality.)
  1. Issues such as abortion and sex trafficking will only increase because women, to many, will be nothing more than mere objects.
  1. Our generation will further mistake “pleasure” for “love” which will inevitably leave them feeling broken, hopeless and confused.
  1. People will further search for their identity in their sexuality which will be shaped by a corrupt society when the Church is silent. No doubt this will have catastrophic consequences.
  1. Confusion in sexual identity will only increase as our generation fights to learn who they really are.
  1. Eating disorders and other extreme actions will multiply because those that feel unloved will take drastic strides to find what they believe they are missing.
  1. Guys and girls alike will give themselves away, sexually, because the Church didn’t teach them their value and they sought it in bringing “pleasure” to someone else.
  1. Marriage will become a thing of the past because what’s the point of being bound up in a contract anyway?

The Most Sobering Thought

While there is so much more we could discuss, let’s close on the most sobering of thoughts. If the church doesn’t take her place, and this list becomes reality, should the day come that this generation wakes up and realizes they’ve made a huge mistake, they will look at us, the Church, and ask, “Why didn’t you tell me?” What will we say? Will we say it was too uncomfortable? Will we say, “I know you and your friends talked about it at work and in school, but I thought it’d be better to ‘shelter’ you.” Church listen, I know it’s not comfortable, but if we don’t take the stage, the world will and they will gladly lead this generation into the despairing list I mentioned above.

Do you want revival? Do you want awakening? This is what it looks like. It looks like those who have been cowering back, stepping up to the plate. It looks like the church taking the charge and teaching this generation how valuable they really are in the eyes of the Father. It looks like Christians, that have been blushing in their pews, answering the questions about dating and sex that this generation has been asking. I know it’s not comfortable. I know it’s not easy. But there is a vacancy that must be filled. Church, will you take the stage?
