Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time. Proverbs 13:11 NLT

Don’t Take the Bait

We’ve all seen the classic commercial salesmen with their “get-rich-quick” call to action. Typically, yelling from the T.V., they promise that if you invest in their product, you’ll quickly become a billionaire. Friend, regardless of how compelling they may be, and how great their promise may sound, save your money. Don’t take the bait. Here’s the deal, a “get-rich-quick scheme” only exist in the realm of fantasy. Your chances of going to bed broke and waking up a millionaire are slim to none. This doesn’t, however, mean you are supposed to live broke.

Here’s The Truth

I need to tell you something. Don’t choke when you read this. Are you ready? God wants you to be wealthy. He delights in blessing you. Have there been those in the church that have misused money and went off the tracks? Sure. Nonetheless God’s word is true and God wants His people to live in the blessing! Awhile back at The Lift, Pastor Keith led us through a phenomenal series called “Living in the Blessing”. One of the key scriptures during the series came from Proverbs 10:22 NKJV, which says, “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich and He adds no sorrow with it.” One service, with great humor, he said, “I looked up the word rich in the original Hebrew language and guess what it means? It means rich!” The old church had it right in saying, “God doesn’t care if you have stuff. He cares if your stuff has you.” The point is simple; God wants you to blessed, even in the realm of finances. I believe we can be the generation that turns around the world’s perception of the church with money. Many have estimated that at one point, John Wesley would have made the equivalent of $240,000 a year and yet chose to live on $20,000, and give the rest away. That is living in the blessing! But that kind of wealth does not happen over night. In Genesis 8:22 NLT it says, “As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest…” There will be a time of sowing seed and nurturing what you have planted before you can collect on the harvest. Though it may be cliché, it’s simply true that as believers, we are blessed for the purpose blessing others. That must be the motive behind the desire for financial prosperity.

Three Things You Must Quit

So, how do we step into a place of abundance? How can we reach a place, financially, that we take care of orphans and widows, and send ministers around the world? To walk in this place of blessing, you must quit these three things immediately.

  1. Quit looking for shortcuts.

Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty. Proverbs 21:5 NLT

If you are ever going to walk in a place of financial abundance, you’ve got to quit looking for an easy way out. You need to dismiss any idea that you are the exception to the rule. Zig Ziglar is credited for the famous saying, “There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.” Do you want to walk in a place of blessing that allows you to bless others? Commit to success and quit looking for handouts.

2.  Quit being a know-it-all.

Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. Proverbs 12:15 NLT

There is a Jewish Proverb that says, “No one is as deaf as the man who will not listen.” To walk in prosperity, you need to find someone that’s already standing where you wish to be and ask them how they got there. Who do you know that you could take out to lunch, pay for their meal, with a notepad and pen in hand, and simply glean from their journey? Do whatever it takes to find out how you can bless others.

3. Quit being a poor worker.

“…remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth…” Deuteronomy 18 NKJV

Wealth and work go hand in hand. Before God gives someone wealth, He gives them work.  Bill gates, who has been labeled the richest man in the world on many occasions, once said, “If you are born poor it’s not your mistake, but if you die poor it’s your mistake.” Christians, of all people, ought to have the absolute best work ethic. If you do little work, you will build little wealth. To reach a place of financial prosperity, that allows you to bless others, you must make it your aim to go above and beyond in your current field of work.

Make the Change

Commit to moving forward. If you will embrace these three necessary changes, you can achieve a place of abundance. The goal is not money. The goal is making a difference.  In our world, however, this often requires financial resources. God wants to prosper you so that you can bless others. What other things can we do to embrace God’s plan of prosperity?
