Planning Ahead

Nearly 38 Million households in America live paycheck to paycheck. Among adults, nearly 26% have no savings set aside at all. As Christians, I’m sure glad that our hope is found in Jesus and not in what we have in our bank accounts! Can I get an “amen?” While it is true that we are not supposed to “worry” about tomorrow, the Bible actually has a lot to say about “planning” for tomorrow. Financial savings could simply be defined as planning ahead.

The Truth

If you are going to be effective financially in “planning ahead”, there is a common myth you’ve got to debunk. You see, among the 26% of adults that have no savings at all, most probably believe that they do not make enough to save. The truth, for nearly every person with this excuse, is that you do have the funds to set back but you are probably spending it at Starbucks, the sales rack, eating out, etc. Here are five verses that you need to know from the Bible on savings:

  1. Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. Proverbs 6:6-8 NLT
  2. Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. Proverbs 13:11 ESV
  3. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous. Proverbs 13:22 ESV
  4. The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get. Proverbs 21:20 NLT
  5. A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. Proverbs 27:12 NLT

Don’t Wait

If you wait for the opportune time to start saving, it may never come. There will always be a reason why “now” is not the best time. Excuses are easy to come by, but it takes courage to make a real change! What are some things that you spend your money on currently that you could cut out? Make a list, make a change, and start saving for the future!
